2 suspected robbers gunned down in Laguna
After trying to defy policemen in mobile checkpoints in Los Baños, Laguna, two suspected robbery gang members were killed early Thursday morning in a shootout with local law enforcers.
In a text message, Laguna police head Senior Superintendent Manolito Labador said the two motorcycle-riding men sped away when they were supposed stop at checkpoints in Barangay (village) Maahas and Barangay Lalakay.
About 3 a.m. in Barangay Lalakay, the two men engaged the police in a shootout.
"They fired [at] the responding police person who in turn fired back at the suspects, which resulted in their untimely death," Labador said.
Recovered from the suspects were a .45-caliber pistol, a .38-caliber revolver, and several empty ammunition shells, Labador said.
He added that the two men were suspects in robberies in Internet cafes, computer shops, and residential houses.
Labador said the suspects might be members of a criminal gang because their motorcycle had no plates.
Labador likewise said the police had intensified mobile checkpoints since the gun ban for the May elections started last January 10. He said police in Laguna have arrested at least 30 people for violating the gun ban since it started.
